DNA sequencing has been a game changer in the field of Biology in the past two decades. This has resulted in generation of huge volumes of data and as a result there is a new field of analyzing DNA sequence data, referred to as Bioinformatics. The field of bioinformatics is advancing our ability to get deeper insights into complex biology that was not possible before. High school students will we working on research projects focusing on DNA sequence analysis. This will be an opportunity to learn about a cutting-edge field that is rarely taught on a high school or even an undergraduate college level. Participating students will be exposed to the vast repository information deposited in biological databases and DNA sequencing and analysis which is becoming highly relevant for everyone, given that sequencing will be routinely done in doctors’ offices soon and will guide medical decisions very similar to X-Ray and MRI technologies and finally open doors to enroll in relevant undergraduate programs to pursue careers in Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical industry.
